About the kit

This is the opening installment of a chapter-based semi-scratch build of HMS Portland (1770), a 50-gun 4th rate two-decker, sold directly by its designer rather than as a single boxed kit. It uses a plank-on-bulkhead and plank-on-frame hybrid construction method with premium woods (MDF, yellow cedar, and either pearwood or cherry) and precision-cut assembly jigs for the hull's structural foundation. The design is based on a contemporary 1774 painting of Portland and the Bristol admiralty model in the Thompson collection; laser-cut parts and fittings are matched to the accompanying monograph chapters, and the project runs to 12 total chapters producing a roughly 50-inch unrigged model at 1:48 scale.
