Overview: The xebec (also chebec/zebec) was a fast, lateen-rigged Mediterranean sailing vessel that originated on the Barbary Coast of North Africa and became the signature ship of the Ottoman regencies of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. It combined galley and caravel design traditions, giving corsair crews the speed and shallow draft needed to dart out of shallow harbors, run down merchantmen, and escape larger warships. Specifications: Xebecs typically displaced 100–200 tons (occasionally up to 600 tons), with a distinctive hull featuring a narrow floor for speed but a wide beam to carry an extensive sail plan, and pronounced overhanging bow and stern. Early xebecs carried two masts; later ones carried three, usually lateen-rigged with the foremast raked forward, and after the 1750s some adopted a mixed square/lateen "polacre-xebec" rig on the foremast. Corsair xebecs mounted anywhere from a handful of guns up to 30–40 pieces plus swivel guns, and carried crews ranging from roughly 90 up to 400 men, supplementing sail with oars/sweeps for use in calm conditions or combat. Service History: Xebecs served the Barbary corsairs from the 17th through the mid-19th century as their principal raiding and privateering vessels, preying on European Christian shipping throughout the Mediterranean. Their success led several European navies — notably Spain and France — to build and operate xebecs of their own to counter the corsair threat, and the type remained in use until Barbary piracy was finally suppressed in the 1820s. Notable Facts: Unlike heavier ships of the line, xebecs favored maneuver and boarding tactics over prolonged gunnery duels, relying on speed and oar power to close with or evade opponents. Their huge lateen yards were often built from two spars lashed together end-to-end because no single timber was long enough, a distinctive feature modelers should note when rigging a xebec kit.
