Overview: SS Normandie was a French ocean liner built at Saint-Nazaire for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and technologically advanced liners ever built and a landmark of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne design. Specifications: The ship measured 313.6 m overall with a 35.9 m beam and a loaded displacement of 68,350 tons, with gross tonnage rising from 79,280 to 83,423 GRT after her 1936 refit. She was powered by four Alsthom steam turbines driving electric motors turning four propellers, giving a designed speed of 29.5 knots and a trials speed over 32 knots, and her innovative hull, shaped with input from Russian émigré naval architect Vladimir Yourkevitch, featured a raked clipper-like bow with a bulbous forefoot beneath the waterline. Service History: Laid down 26 January 1931 and launched 29 October 1932, she made her maiden voyage on 29 May 1935 and served as flagship of the CGT, making 139 westbound transatlantic crossings between Le Havre and New York. She repeatedly held the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing, with the RMS Queen Mary as her chief rival, though she was never a commercial success and depended partly on government subsidy. Notable Facts: Seized by US authorities at New York in 1942 and renamed USS Lafayette, she caught fire during conversion to a troopship and capsized onto her port side in the Hudson River at Pier 88; she was righted in 1943 but her hull had deteriorated too far for economical restoration, leading to scrapping in 1946. Her interiors, including works by René Lalique and other leading French designers, along with her pioneering hull form, remain a favorite subject for scale modelers seeking to capture 1930s ocean liner elegance.
