Overview: SMS Von der Tann was the first battlecruiser built for the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) and Germany's first major turbine-powered capital ship, laid down in 1908 and commissioned in 1910. Though technically a battlecruiser rather than a true battleship, she is catalogued here under Battleship as the closest listed category since she was a first-line dreadnought-era capital ship. She was designed as Germany's answer to the British Invincible class, but with a different philosophy emphasizing armor over gun caliber. Specifications: She displaced 19,370 t design / 21,300 t full load, was 171.7 m long with a 26.6 m beam, and was armed with eight 28 cm (11 in) SK L/45 guns, lighter than the British 12 in guns of contemporaries but carried on a much better-armored hull. Powered by four Parsons steam turbines driving four screws, she could reach speeds over 27 knots, making her the fastest dreadnought-type warship afloat at the time of her construction. She carried notably heavier armor than her British Indefatigable-class counterparts. Service History: Von der Tann took part in several German raids on the English coast, including bombardments near Scarborough and Whitby in December 1914. At the Battle of Jutland (31 May–1 June 1916) she engaged and sank the British battlecruiser HMS Indefatigable in the opening minutes, though she herself was hit multiple times, including by shells from HMS Barham and HMS Tiger, which knocked out all of her main gun turrets for a period. Following the Armistice she was interned with the High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow and was scuttled there on 21 June 1919 to prevent Allied seizure. Notable Facts: The wreck was raised in December 1930 by Cox & Danks Shipbreaking Co. and subsequently scrapped at Rosyth between 1931 and 1934; the salvage operation was hazardous, with workers nearly killed during an explosion caused by cutting equipment. Her design set a lasting precedent for German battlecruisers of favoring armor protection and survivability over gun caliber, a philosophy validated by her strong performance and survival at Jutland despite serious damage.
