Overview: The Oseberg ship is a Viking Age longship, likely a karve-type vessel, excavated from a large burial mound at the Oseberg farm near Tønsberg, Norway in 1904. It is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved and most important artifacts surviving from the Viking Age, and today forms the centerpiece of Norway's Viking ship collection. Specifications: The clinker-built oak hull measures roughly 21.5 meters (70.8 ft) long and 5.1 meters (16.7 ft) wide, with a mast estimated at 9-10 meters tall and a sail area around 90 square meters, giving a potential speed up to about 10 knots. It has 15 pairs of oar openings for up to 30 rowers, plus a steering oar, iron anchor, gangplank, and bailer; the bow and stern feature elaborate "gripping beast" style woodcarving known as the Oseberg style. Service History: Dendrochronology dates the ship's construction to around 820 AD, and it was used roughly 14 years later as a funeral ship for a high-status burial containing two women and a lavish array of grave goods, before being interred beneath a mound. The site was first noticed by a farmer in 1903 and excavated in 1904 by archaeologist Gabriel Gustafson, uncovering carts, sleighs, textiles, tools, and animal remains alongside the ship. Notable Facts: Roughly 90-95% of the surviving hull is original timber, an exceptional preservation rate credited to the burial mound's blue clay and turf. A 1987 full-scale sailing reconstruction named "Dronningen," built from drawings of the museum ship, sank on its very first sea trial, prompting later re-examination of the original hull form; a further replica, "Saga Oseberg," was built in 2012. The ship was relocated within a newly expanded Museum of the Viking Age at the University of Oslo in 2025 after nearly a century on display at the original Viking Ship Museum at Bygdøy.
