Overview: NRP Vasco da Gama (F330) is the lead ship of the Vasco da Gama-class (MEKO 200 PN) frigates of the Portuguese Navy, named for the famous 15th-century Portuguese explorer. She was built by Blohm + Voss in Hamburg using modular MEKO construction techniques shared with sister ships built at HDW in Kiel. Specifications: The ship displaces 2,920 tons standard and 3,200 tons full load, with a length of 115.9 m, beam of 14.8 m, and draught of 6.2 m. Armament includes a 100 mm Mod68 CADAM gun, a Phalanx CIWS, RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles, RIM-7 Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles, two triple Mk32 torpedo tube mounts, and a flight deck/hangar for two Super Lynx Mk.95 helicopters, giving modelers a busy, detail-rich modern warship subject. Service History: The frigate saw active NATO and multinational operations, including a 1995 deployment to the Adriatic as part of Operation Sharp Guard, during which she inspected 91 merchant ships enforcing sanctions against the former Yugoslavia. In July 1998 she was sent off Guinea-Bissau to evacuate Portuguese and other European civilians during that country's civil war, and from November 1999 to February 2000 she served with the Australian-led INTERFET peacekeeping force in East Timor. She later took part in NATO's Exercise Trident Juncture in 2015. Notable Facts: As class leader, Vasco da Gama shares her modular MEKO 200 design with sister ships Álvares Cabral and Corte-Real, and similar MEKO 200 derivatives were built for Greece, Turkey, Australia, and New Zealand, offering modelers useful cross-reference for hull and superstructure details. She has been inactive and laid up since 2019 while undergoing a modernization program at the Arsenal do Alfeite shipyard, part of a broader upgrade of the class that includes replacing her Sea Sparrow missiles with RIM-162 ESSM, whereas her two sister ships remain in active Portuguese Navy service.
