Overview: Jylland is a Danish sail-and-screw steam frigate, one of the largest wooden warships ever built, now preserved as a museum ship in a permanent dry dock in Ebeltoft, Denmark. She was the last wooden warship built for the Royal Danish Navy, and is reportedly the world's last surviving screw frigate. Specifications: Built at the Naval War Yard in Copenhagen (laid down 1857, launched 1860, commissioned 1862), Jylland is a Niels Juel-class sail- and screw-propelled steam frigate. Per Wikipedia's infobox, she has a Displacement: 2456 tons; Length: 102 m (335 ft); Beam: 13.5 m (44 ft); Draft: 6 m (20 ft); Propulsion: 1300 indicated hp Baumgarten & Burmeister steam engine, 1-shaft with a folding helix; square-rigged sail plan; speed 11 kn on steam, 12 kn on sail; complement 405–437; and as built carried 30 x 30-pounder 50 cwt guns and 14 x 30-pounder 40 cwt guns, with the armament altered several times afterward, including a heavier wartime fit in 1864 and later mixed muzzle- and breech-loading batteries. Service History: During the Second War of Schleswig in 1864, Jylland participated in the naval action against the Austrian-Prussian fleet in the Battle of Heligoland on 9 May 1864, where she and Niels Juel and Heimdall bested two Austrian frigates and three small Prussian gunboats, though she was unable to help maintain the blockade of the Prussian North Sea ports and sustained considerable damage during the battle. She later served as a barracks and training ship between 1892 and 1908, narrowly escaping being scrapped. Notable Facts: Her figurehead was carved by sculptor Julius Magnus Petersen and represents the region of Jutland in the form of a shepherd's rod and a fishing net. She was towed to Ebeltoft in 1960, but the hulked frigate continued to deteriorate until she was placed in dry dock in 1984. Restoration proved to be a major task, with over 60% of her timber replaced along with the rigging, armament, engines, and loose gear, and the work was completed in 1994, after which she went on permanent public display in her Ebeltoft dry dock.
