Overview: HSwMS Gustaf V was a Sverige-class coastal defence ship (pansarskepp) of the Swedish Navy, the third and last vessel of her class alongside HSwMS Sverige and HSwMS Drottning Victoria. Though officially classed as a coastal defence ship rather than a true ocean-going battleship, she is best represented in this database under the Battleship type, being a heavily armored, gun-armed capital ship built for coastal battle-line duty in the Baltic. Specifications: She displaced 6,842 tons standard (7,663 tons full load) and measured about 121.6 m overall with an 18.63 m beam. Main armament was four 283 mm (28 cm) Bofors guns in two twin turrets, backed by a secondary battery originally of eight 152 mm guns, plus numerous smaller anti-aircraft weapons added over her service life; armor belt and turret protection reached 200 mm. Twin geared steam turbines fed by 12 Yarrow boilers gave her a top speed of about 23.2 knots. Service History: Built at Kockums Mekaniska Verkstad in Malmö, she was laid down in 1915, launched 15 September 1917, and finally commissioned in December 1922 after wartime material shortages (including armor plate ordered from the United States) delayed completion. She served as a mobilized, high-readiness fleet unit through World War II, later served as flagship after Sverige was discarded in 1947, and finished her career largely as a training ship before being decommissioned on 22 March 1957. Notable Facts: After decommissioning she was mothballed at Berga Naval Base near Stockholm, used as a mooring point for destroyers until 1967, and was eventually sold for scrapping around 1970. Two of her 152 mm secondary guns survive today, preserved as fortified coastal guns in the Kalix defensive line near Häggmansberget, offering modelers a tangible surviving artifact from the ship.
