Overview: HMS Victory is a 100-gun first-rate ship of the line, most famous as Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. She is the last surviving warship of the 18th-century Royal Navy and the oldest commissioned warship in the world, though she now sits permanently in dry dock rather than afloat. Specifications: Launched in 1765 at Chatham Dockyard to a design by Sir Thomas Slade, she measured about 186 feet (57 m) in length with a displacement around 2,162 tons and a crew of more than 800. She mounted 100-104 guns across three gun decks, used roughly 2,000 oak trees in her construction, and originally carried close to four acres of sail across 37 sails supported by over 26 miles of rigging — details that make her an exceptionally well-documented subject for large-scale plank-on-frame modeling. Service History: Commissioned in 1778, Victory served over 20 years in active duty, including the Siege of Toulon in 1793 and fleet actions during the American War of Independence and French Revolutionary Wars, most notably as flagship under Admiral Augustus Keppel at the First Battle of Ushant in 1778 and under Richard Kempenfelt in 1781. Her most famous role came at Trafalgar in 1805, where Nelson was mortally wounded aboard her during the decisive victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets. Notable Facts: In 1922 she was moved into No. 2 Dock at Portsmouth after falling into poor condition and risking sinking at her moorings, and has remained there ever since as a museum ship while still serving as flagship of the First Sea Lord. She is currently undergoing an extensive multi-year conservation project to preserve her hull and rigging for future generations. Her fore topsail from Trafalgar survives and is preserved under controlled conditions at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, a rare surviving artifact prized by modelers researching authentic sail detailing.
