Overview: HMCS Niobe was a Diadem-class protected cruiser of the Royal Navy, launched in 1897, that became one of the first two major warships of the newly formed Canadian naval service in 1910, alongside HMCS Rainbow. She holds significant symbolic importance as the first large ship of the Royal Canadian Navy and arrived in Halifax on Trafalgar Day, 21 October 1910, an anniversary still marked as "Niobe Day." Specifications: As one of the first four Diadem-class ships, Niobe displaced 11,000 long tons and measured 435 feet between perpendiculars (462 ft 6 in overall), with a beam of 69 feet and a draught of 25 feet 6 inches. She was propelled by two shafts fed by 30 Belleville boilers driving triple-expansion engines rated at 16,500 indicated horsepower, giving a designed speed around 20.5 knots, and her main armament included single 152mm (6-inch) guns on shielded mountings rather than turrets. Service History: Built by Vickers at Barrow-in-Furness and completed in 1898, Niobe served in the Boer War escorting troop transports and later escorted the royal yacht HMS Ophir on parts of a world tour. Transferred to Canada in 1910 to help found the Royal Canadian Navy, she ran aground off Cape Sable, Nova Scotia in 1911, was repaired, and during the First World War patrolled the Gulf of St Lawrence and the American coast with the Royal Navy's 4th Cruiser Squadron, including chasing the German raider SS Prinz Eitel Friedrich into internment at Newport News. Worn out by 1915, she was paid off as a depot ship in Halifax, was badly damaged in the 1917 Halifax Explosion, and was eventually sold for scrap and broken up in Philadelphia in 1922. Notable Facts: Niobe's crew suffered losses during the Halifax Explosion when a boarding party sent from the ship to the burning munitions vessel Mont-Blanc was killed in the subsequent blast. Two of her 6-inch guns survive on static display in Saint John, New Brunswick, at HMCS Brunswicker and the 3rd Field Regiment Armoury, offering useful close-up reference for modelers on gun and shield detail.
