Overview: The geobukseon, or "turtle ship," was a large oar-and-sail-powered Korean warship of the Joseon navy, famed for the spiked, shell-like roof covering its deck. It fought alongside the more numerous panokseon-class ships against Japanese fleets during the Imjin War (1592-1598) under Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who is credited with redesigning and popularizing the type though earlier "gwiseon" turtle ships date back to the early 15th century. Specifications: Built on a panokseon-type hull, the ship was roughly 100-120 feet long with a 30-40 foot beam, propelled by around 80 oarsmen with roughly 50 additional marines aboard. It carried eleven gun ports per side (plus one in the dragon-head bow and others at stern), firing cannon and specialized wooden bolts, and its curved deck cover was studded with iron spikes to deter enemy boarding. Service History: Turtle ships first saw major action in 1592 battles such as Sacheon, contributing to a string of victories credited to Admiral Yi against Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invading fleets. Their closed, armored deck protected crews from arquebus fire and boarding parties, a key tactical advantage over the Japanese navy's preferred grapple-and-board approach. The type eventually fell out of active use after the war, though later Joseon-era reconstructions continued. Notable Facts: No original geobukseon survive, but full-scale and reduced-scale replicas are on display at sites including the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul and the Korean Naval Academy, and a 1:1 replica is anchored at Yeosu. Some historians describe it as one of the earliest ironclad-type warships, though evidence that the covering was actual iron plate (rather than wood-with-spikes designed to look armored) remains disputed. A well-known period depiction of the ship appears in the 1795 compilation "Yi Ch'ungmu Kong chŏnsŏ," useful as an early visual reference for modelers.
