Overview: Batavia was the flagship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), a spiegelretourschip (mirror-stern return ship) built for the lucrative but perilous trade run between the Dutch Republic and the East Indies. She is famous not for her brief career but for her catastrophic wrecking and the mutiny and massacre that followed, one of the most notorious episodes in maritime history. Specifications: The ship was roughly 45 meters (about 149 feet) in length with a beam near 10.2 meters and a hold depth of about 5.45 meters, displacing around 600 tons burthen. She carried a mixed armament of at least 22 cast-iron cannon plus several bronze and composite guns, and was full-rigged with a complement of several hundred passengers and crew for the outbound voyage. Service History: Completed in 1628 at the Peperwerf yard in Amsterdam, Batavia departed on her maiden voyage on 29 October 1628 bound for the VOC headquarters at Batavia (modern Jakarta). On 4 June 1629 she struck a reef in the Houtman Abrolhos islands off the coast of Western Australia and was wrecked; the disaster was followed by a mutiny among survivors that resulted in the murder of over a hundred men, women, and children before rescue and retribution arrived. Notable Facts: Of the many VOC wrecks ever located, Batavia is the only early 17th-century example whose hull timbers were recovered, conserved, and studied in detail, with surviving remains and artifacts displayed at the Western Australian Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle. A meticulously researched full-scale replica was built by shipwright Willem Vos and volunteers between 1985 and 1995 using traditional 17th-century construction techniques, launched at Lelystad, and is now moored there as a museum ship at Bataviawerf/Batavialand, giving modelers an exceptionally well-documented reference for rigging, ornamentation, and hull form.
